MAX BMX — The First BMX Specific Leathers

In the early 1980s, MAX USA was founded in Fullerton, California by the Johnson family—the same creators behind Torker. The company operated alongside the original Torker factory and was managed by Doris and Doug Johnson, with key involvement from BMX industry icon Harold “McGoo” Gruther.

The MAX name came from Torker’s well-known advertising slogan of the era, “To the Max.” As BMX entered its first major boom, MAX quickly rose to prominence and became one of the most dominant pant brands in the sport. Backed by aggressive advertising and a strong roster of sponsored riders, the brand helped define the look of early BMX culture.

At its peak, MAX supported some of the biggest names in BMX racing, including Eddy King, Clint Miller, Mike Miranda, Tommy Brackens, and Micky Lundy. It also moved early into freestyle BMX, backing influential pioneers such as Bob Haro, Eddie Fiola, Mike Buff, Martin Aparijo, Woody Itson, and Fred Blood as the discipline was just beginning to take shape.

Following Torker’s bankruptcy in 1984, MAX disappeared from BMX for decades.

The brand was revived in 2024 by Bill Ryan, who had already built a long history in the industry. At just 15 years old in 1984, Ryan launched TECH Racing Pants from his bedroom, supplying teams such as Redline, Haro, S&M, and Cyclecraft. That early venture established his reputation for functional, race-proven BMX apparel built around durability, fit, and rider-driven design.

Today, MAX carries forward the same philosophy. The lineup mirrors the original TECH playbook: made-to-order production, heavy-duty nylon pac cloth construction, integrated knee and shin padding, snap belt closure, and Velcro calf adjustments. Colorways are rooted in classic 1980s team aesthetics—the same designs riders once chased in BMX’s golden era.

The Pants
MAX Racing Pants are ordered by waist size and produced in classic team colorways, including the original Trick Team red/white/blue with stars. Another option pays tribute to the Torker factory team, featuring the yellow/white/black colorway worn throughout the 1980s.

Each pair is made to order and ships in approximately 30 days.

The Tees

  • MAX Racing Factory T-Shirt — black and yellow MAX graphic, worn in the 1980s when Torker riders weren’t in team jerseys.
  • MAX BMX 1980s California Palms T — a graphic nod to the Southern California BMX era.

Everything is built using the same approach as 1984 and ships from Apple Valley, California.
